NEVER LET ME GO, 2017
Concrete
Modeled from a puffin in the stages before taxidermy (an empty hide contorted without a skeleton), this cast relief was inspired by images of dead puffins washed up on beaches. As a seabird, a puffin possesses the ability to inhabit three realms: underwater, on land and in the sky. Here there are two weighted slabs sunk to the bottom of adjacent fountains for two months. The slabs themselves remain still, but the water distorts and magnifies, with occasional ripples that obscure the image.
